CHINA AND THE ALLIES, by A. Henry Savage-Landor, Set of 2, 1901 First American Edition. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. With illustrations and maps by the author. A detailed history of the Boxer Rebellion, including the lead-up, attacks on the missionaries and their converts, the Allied march to Beijing and attacks on the legation, the fighting and actions of the various international contingents - Germans, French, British and Japanese.
The second volume focuses more on the experiences of the foreigners and the Chinese Christian converts who sought refuge in the Legations. Vol 1 has two color plates and 18 full pages photographic illustrations; Vol 2 has three color plates (one double page), and 30 full page black and white photographic illustrations.
Both volumes have scores more smaller photographic illustrations within the text and maps and plans. Very attractive original decorative cloth, with black titles in English and Chinese, and gilt and green designs. Vol 1 - 382 pages; Vol 2 - 446 pages.
Formerly in the collection of the Scoville Memorial Library (the library of Salisbury, CT), with labels to bottom of spines, endpapers lightly (but not badly) marred from removal of bookplate and/or sign-out sheet. Embossed library stamp on title page. Some of the full page illustrations seem a little loose, but still holding. Volumes tightly bound, and a nice-looking set.
An important history of the Boxer Rebellion, much of it gathered from first hand sources immediately following the cessations of hostilities.
