This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords, and he has struck them vibrantly -J. Donald Adams, The New York Times, 1940. The first edition of For Whom the Bell Tolls was one of Hemingways more successful books. Though the first printing run is estimated at approximately 100,000 copies, it can now only be distinguished from later printings with the presence of the original dust jacket lacking the photographer's credit on the rear panel.

Like most titles of the time, the jacket was fragile, and far fewer survived. With more and more jackets being lost or damaged, the scarcity of this first printing continues to increase. Binding is square and tight. Boards are rich original full bound oatmeal cloth with bold stamped signature of the Author on front.

Spine is lightly faded and along with top eighth of rear board. Very mild stains at top and bottom of front board near edges. Internally clean and unmarked but for owner's name on front pastedown.

Crisp and bold text with typical tanning to pages. Near Fine Dust Jacket - FEL. Anels and spine are unfaded with very mild wear near hinges and creases.
